The monument to the First Battle of Litttle Sparta is beside the track leading up to the garden, on the site of one of the Vigilantes' checkpoints. Its words, quoted from Virgil's Eighth Eclogue, Flute begin with me Arcadian notes, aligns the polemic of the machine gun, whose sleeve vents stand for the finger stops of the flute, with the idyllic yet hardy life of the semi-mythical Arcadian flute-playing shepherds. Implied in the imagery is the necessity for art to accept conflict as a means to replace disorder with order.
